A regulated process

How debt counselling works, step by step.

Understanding how debt counselling works begins with a confidential assessment, followed by formal notices, an affordability assessment, a repayment proposal and the appropriate legal process.

The complete journey

From first conversation to clearance.

A free, confidential conversation

You tell us about your income, essential expenses and credit commitments. We explain whether a formal assessment may help.

Application and formal notices

If you apply, you complete the prescribed application and we notify the relevant credit providers and credit bureaus.

Assessment of affordability

We assess whether you appear over-indebted and calculate an amount that allows for reasonable living expenses.

A proposed rearrangement

Where appropriate, we prepare a proposal and negotiate with credit providers. A proposal is not automatically accepted.

The plan is formalised

The rearrangement is referred to the appropriate legal forum, which may be the NCT or a Magistrate’s Court.

One structured payment

You pay through a registered Payment Distribution Agent, which distributes funds according to the plan.

Support through to clearance

We attend to ongoing queries and the clearance process when the applicable requirements are met.

Important to understand

Protection with responsibilities.

The process can restrict certain enforcement action when legal requirements are met, but it does not undo enforcement steps already begun before application. Your circumstances must be assessed individually under the National Credit Act.

  • Provide complete, accurate information
  • Keep agreed payments up to date
  • Tell us if your circumstances change
  • Do not take further credit during debt review
